Ongoing soil work

Spread another wheelbarrow full of our 9-month old, horse manure compost on the cardboard base. Then, added ten wheelbarrows full of Schneider Tree mulch to the top.

The mulch at the northern end of the garden was from Schneider trees.  Paid $29 for two yards of the stuff.  Much nicer and more finely ground than the mulch from the Welford (Spartanburg County) landfill ($5).  Hopefully, that will facilitate composting of the organic matter before next spring's planting.

When I pulled up a section of cardboard at the SW corner of the old wallow area (now full of decomposed pine, shavings, our aged horse manure, and cardboard) I saw a gob of earthworms working the soil. That was encouraging.  Hopefully, the same situation is being repeated all over this garden.  I'm somewhat skeptical that the Welford Landfill mulch is going to break down.  Some of it was pretty fine, but there was a lot of pretty big pieces of wood in it.
